This all happened in one meeting, but considering Snape would do what Dumbledore said regardless then it's hard to say whether it was something arranged before the meeting or something arranged after. If anything, the way it's worded with the "amazed" and no indication of a refusal just makes me think Remus was like "wait, really? Me?" and Dumbledore had the potion in his back pocket if Remus appeared to be waffling about on it. Remus was amazed when Dumbledore offered him the post of Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher I actually looked at the article better and there's no reasoning as to why it took the wolfsbane potion to convince Remus to accept the position. If you bother to listen to Pottermore it does confirm Lupin took it because of the wolfsbane, but considering how desperate Lupin was for work I don't think that was his main consideration tbh. I don't agree with their assessment that it implies Dumbledore made Snape do it, but it can easily be taken either way. I don't think Dumbledore expected to get any information from Remus overly, but that probably was something that helped.Įta: After posting this comment I saw someone else had linked to a pottermore article. I think Lupin was hired for two reasons: Dumbledore is scrounging the bottom of the barrel to find teachers (see Lockhart), and because it puts him somewhere Dumbledore can watch him if Sirius does come for him for whatever reason. He's desperate for a job and income in general, and Hogwarts promises some safety in case his old pal comes calling. I don't think the wolfsbane potion was incentive for Lupin. I think Snape would have made the potion willingly not because he liked Lupin or wanted the fullmoon to be pleasant for him but to ensure that nothing happened to any other student like it almost happened to him. These are questions that we sadly can't answer very well. It seems unlikely that Dumbledore would have been able to track Remus down, offer him the position, get the name of the textbook Remus decided to use, and get the Hogwarts letters with supply lists sent out in the (presumably) short period of time between when Sirius broke out and when the news about Sirius broke to the public. So, Sirius would have escaped very recently. Harry gets his Hogwarts letter with his booklist (including a new Defense text) on his birthday, which is the same day that Sirius's escape is advertised on muggle television. I think Lupin teaching the same year that Sirius broke out was a coincidence. ![]() He was only persuaded to accept when Dumbledore explained that there would be a limitless supply of Wolfsbane Potion, courtesy of the Potions master, Severus Snape. ![]() Delighted to see the Headmaster, Remus was amazed when Dumbledore offered him the post of Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Once again, Albus Dumbledore changed the course of Remus Lupin’s life when he tracked him down to a tumbledown, semi-derelict cottage in Yorkshire. I'd assume that Dumbledore ordered Snape to make it it doesn't seem like something Snape would choose to do on his own to me, personally. The Wolfsbane Potion was a way to persuade Lupin to agree - Lupin only agreed to teach because Dumbledore told him he would get it.
